Before all this big forgiveness, there were blue skies booming over my electric fences. Mossy ponds and glassy pools with waxy leaves of loquat trees forming shadows of sharks to swim from. When fear could be a game we play, our only threats imagined, stories we told about the shed in the field, the well we drank from, and who hanged the hanged man. When gold was something you could chew on, when the gift was from the horse's mouth, and any railroad was a railroad home. Through another pasture—always more pasture—to lend you taller grasses, a new pillow to hear the same song. Frogs, crickets, owls, echoing the same song.
